Preschool programs will be able to serve enrolled 3-year-olds starting Monday

Posted Date: 8/16/24 (4:24 PM)

Dear Windsor Community:

After a long, and often frustrating journey, we are thrilled to be able to announce that our licensing application to serve three-year-olds in our preschool program has been approved. We started this process in November of 2023, and turned in our completed applications in April and May for what was meant to be a 90-day turnaround, according to the state. Unfortunately, newly implemented processes at the state caused delay after frustrating delay, and we found ourselves receiving little support or guidance from the agency meant to help facilitate this process.

We’d like to thank the office of State Senator Mike McGuire who stepped in and helped work through the challenges at the state level. We would also like to thank our Board of Trustees, and specifically Vice President Stephanie Ahmad, for their support and advocacy as we negotiated this process. In addition, we spoke to our media partners at the Press Democrat and believe their involvement brought extra scrutiny to the process and helped move things along. We expect an article that will more fully explain the challenges and outcomes to come out in the future.

But all of that is now history, and we are eagerly turning our sights to the future. We expect to welcome students on Monday, August 19th at both our Mattie Washburn and Cali Calmecac campuses. As these details are finalized, we will be sharing more information with enrolled families. We look forward to embarking on this new educational chapter, and to our new preschool students joining their four-year-old classmates.

Our new preschool program will be available at both Mattie Washburn Elementary School and Cali Calmecac Language Academy, providing a nurturing and supportive environment where our 3-year-olds can thrive. We have been working diligently to ensure that our facilities, staff, and curriculum are fully prepared to meet the needs of these young learners.

While our classes for this school year are set, we look forward to continuing to expand our program in future years, and offer cost-effective and excellent preschool programs to families throughout our community. We understand the importance of early education in setting the foundation for lifelong learning, and we are committed to providing a high-quality preschool experience that fosters growth, curiosity, and a love for learning. We look forward to sharing that experience with all our entire community of families.

Now that we have our start date, please reach out if you have any questions or need further clarification. We are here to support you and ensure this important program's smooth and successful launch.

Thank you once again for your support and flexibility. Questions can be directed to Jessica Borland, jborland@wusd.org
