SoCoVA’s Mission

At Sonoma County Virtual Academy (SoCoVA), we are dedicated to providing a dynamic and innovative online learning experience for students in grades 6-12. Our mission is to empower students with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to thrive in an ever-evolving global landscape.

By leveraging cutting-edge technology and embracing diverse teaching methodologies, we aim to inspire a lifelong love of learning and prepare our students to meet the challenges of the future.

In addition, being a part of a brick-and-mortar school district (from the Windsor Unified School District) means that SoCoVA students have opportunities often missing from traditional online education, such as attending games and events, participating in sports and clubs, enjoying traditional experiences like Prom or Homecoming, and other rights of passage. Being part of a local school district ensures adherence to state educational standards and policies, giving parents peace of mind regarding the quality and accreditation of the education their children are receiving.

Sonoma County Virtual Academy (SoCoVA) is more than a school; it's a virtual hub for exploration, discovery, and growth. At the heart of our mission is the belief that every student is unique, with individual strengths and aspirations. We strive to create a flexible and personalized educational journey that caters to the diverse needs of our students.

Portrait of a SoCoVa Student

  • These programs rely entirely on the students, and by extension their families, to be as much, if not more, committed to the schoolwork than a traditional school setting. While there is some flexibility of scheduling, students and families should expect school to still be a five-day-a-week endeavor and require students to keep their own calendars and stay on track with work.

Students without intrinsic motivation to complete work and do well will likely struggle in the virtual environment just as they may have in regular classwork. Independent learners, kids who will be accountable and fulfill their agreement and take advantage of opportunity, will succeed.

  • Students who do well with virtual learning often connect with their designated teacher daily or weekly. They keep an open line of communication with the teacher and are not afraid to ask for help or guidance when needed. If a student struggles to ask for help, doesn’t want to interact with their teacher regularly or is a poor communicator, they may not be a good candidate for our school. Our teachers work hard to offer a variety of communication platforms, so students can use the ones they are most comfortable with, but they must still be willing to use them.

  • Students and families must have access to a computer and internet connection and must be comfortable and savvy enough to operate technology with minimal hands-on assistance from the District. WUSD will provide students with a Chromebook, or they may use their own device. If utilizing a District Chromebook, then families will be required to attend an in-person orientation to pick it up and be trained on it’s use.

  • The contract for SoCoVA is signed by students and their families and is enforceable as such. Families should understand that there is a significant commitment inherent in this school model. They should be prepared to potentially log in daily with their student, check their progress and work to make sure deadlines and assignments are being met, and more. Families should communicate with teachers as well, and there is a family portal feature that parents are logged into where they can check progress.

What else is there to know about SoCoVA?

  • High School credit deficient students can make credit up alongside their regular work–it’s the same system.
  • SoCoVA students can take advantage of dual enrollment at community college to get an extra leg-up on their future.
  • SoCoVA high school-age students have the opportunity to take part in some traditional “rites of passage,” including sports, clubs, dances (including Prom and Homecoming), graduation ceremonies, attending games and performances, and activities like Project Graduation. If students have a specific interest or activity on campus they would still like access to, contact the program coordinator to find out if it can be accommodated.
  • The program used is Edgenuity Some portions of the program are video and others are reading-based. There is live tutoring support for students, available for every student, with an actual teacher on the other end of the chat box.
  • SoCoVA students can attend school from anywhere with Wi-Fi access, freeing them to pursue interests outside of the school environment such as non-high school sports or travel and exploration.
  • SoCoVA students can follow both A-G (UC/CSU college prep) and Advanced Placement pathways.
  • SoCoVA is for students in grades 6 through 12.
  • Students with IEPs and 504s can be SoCoVA students, though not every plan is suitable for the program, and prospective students will be required to take part in transition meetings to see if their plans are supportive of the student joining SoCoVA.
