Meet Corey Lewis, Mattie’s New Dean of Students

Corey Lewis isn’t new to Mattie Washburn, but she is stepping out of the classroom to fulfill a new role on campus. She will be taking over as Dean of Students, and this will allow all of Mattie’s students to benefit from her experience.

Lewis has been teaching for 21 years, 19 of those years here in Windsor. She’s taught 4th, 1st and 2nd grades, and she holds a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies and a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential. She was most recently teaching second grade at Mattie, with her class now in the capable hands of Whitney Jackson.

So, what does her new role look like? The Dean of Students is responsible for monitoring student behavior in collaboration with the Student Advisor and Principal. She will work to foster a positive, caring and healthy school culture and community by providing student-focused events, leadership opportunities and engaging school-wide activities that enable students to flourish at Mattie Washburn.

“It means a lot to me that our administrators and teachers have confidence that I can be an effective Dean of Students,” Lewis said. “I feel that having lived the life of a teacher for so long and having good working relationships with many of my colleagues, I have the needed perspective to help make positive change.”

The addition of a Dean of Students at Mattie Washburn will implement a model that has already been successful at our other district elementary school sites, Brooks and Cali Calmécac,” said Mattie principal Patricia Chadwick. “With all elementary sites in WUSD now having a Dean of Students in place, we will be able to create and implement more sustainable systems for student behavior and positive reinforcement district-wide. Corey is the ideal person to take on this role.”

“Mattie is a special place,” Lewis said. “The staff who work with our youngest learners need to do so with unique care. I am eager to help create and maintain needed systems of support for our students and teachers. I am hopeful that I can make changes or continue to support current programs that will build our school community. I hope to see teachers feeling confident in their teaching and all students being able to learn in a safe, caring environment.”

Lewis has been married for 17 years to her husband, Adam and is Mom to two boys — Caleb, 12, and Mason, 10. She spends most of her time outside of work watching her kids play sports, but she also enjoys hitting the beach and hiking.

Please join us in welcoming Corey Lewis to her new role at Mattie Washburn.
