Hello Windsor Community:
If you are a user of the David Smith Memorial Park (formerly Pleasant Oak Park), you may have noticed the beginnings of construction in one section of the park, along with security fencing. Knowing there have been questions, we wanted to share with you what is going on there, and the exciting plans for our school.
Town residents may be unaware that a significant portion of the land the park sits on is not actually owned by the Town, but rather is part of the neighboring campus for Mattie Washburn Elementary and owned by the Windsor Unified School District. This includes a significant swath of the land adjoining the campus, including the dog park. The District has allowed the Town to utilize the land as part of the park, and will continue to do so, however, new needs for the Mattie Washburn campus has led to a portion of that land being needed for expansion.
With the requirement of all California public schools implementing universal preschool, the District has a need for a dedicated space for preschoolers on the Mattie campus. Therefore we are adding to the campus on District land adjacent to the park. We hope to have the project completed at or near the beginning of the 2025-26 school year.
The facility will include classrooms, play space, a gathering spot for parents and an administration building. It will seek to preserve the natural features of the park, by incorporating the terrain, trees, and other features into an outdoor classroom that children can explore. Mature trees that are healthy will be preserved and incorporated into the design.
Attached you will see both some renderings of the finished project, as well as a location map to outline what portion of the park is being developed. At this time, there are no plans to assimilate the dog park or other areas, and to continue to allow the Town and residents to enjoy them as part of the park.
We thank you for your patience during the construction process, and look forward to sharing our beautiful new preschool with all of you.
Best regards,
Windsor Unified School District
